Review: The Golden Compass
The Golden Compass by Philip PullmanMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
Whatever you call this book, boring is not one of them. An absolute page turner and an awesome story. I'm only mildly irked by the fact that the first part ends a little abruptly to my liking. I have some idea why this book was considered anti-christian, what with the way church had once dealt with anything it didn't understand mirroring in this book. But keeping it aside it's wonderful story with beautiful writing, and some really stop-and-read-it-again metaphors, like the one below, (no-spoilers)
That was when he moved. Like a wave that has been building its strength over a thousand miles of ocean, and which makes little stir in the deep water, but which when it reaches the shallows rears itself up high into the sky, terrifying the shore dwellers, before crashing down on the land with irresistible power—
I'm very eager to get on with the other books in the trilogy. This series might very well keep me awake, like those books of Agatha Christie.
