Review: Poonachi: Or the Story of a Black Goat

Poonachi: Or the Story of a Black Goat Poonachi: Or the Story of a Black Goat by Perumal Murugan
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The biggest highlight of the book is the way it makes you care about the life and feelings of a goat. That I'd say is the marvel of the writing which takes us trough a full gamut of human emotions expressed through goat and the characters, including people, beside it.

While telling the story of a goat it also shows the ways and hardships faced by poor people whose sustenance depends on the rains and the pastures. This book scintillates in places, a little philosophical at times and a little emotional, cruel, melodramatic and satirical other times.

Decent book, but didn't close on the same promise as the way it started. In the first few chapters it was dealing with fun and satire regularly, while the later part is almost entirely devoid of these. Story goes on, becoming more philosophical, almost echoing a dialogue that the old couple keep on uttering and reflecting.

No matter how much you give to this heart, it will never be enough.

I wouldn't call it a must read, but a decent read nevertheless.
