Review: Harrison Bergeron
Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Extraordinarily remarkable premise!
I was once talking to a friend about writing a story to mock some policies, she then told me that the premise of it sounded a lot like Harrison Bergeron. I have then put it on my to-read list but didn't get to reading it till now. Wish I have read it earlier. This story shows how powerful writing can be, since it's all about ideas. And like Alan Moore says, in V for Vendetta, “ideas are bulletproof”. And to see that Kurt Vonnegut has written this story in 1961 shows the visionary he is. Hats off to you sir.
I almost feel like, we as a society are slowly and surely moving towards the scenario that premises this story. People having a problem with every damn word and taking offence at every thing. It has becoming too difficult to talk in a politically correct way since there are more and more corrections every single day. Some I agree are absolutely necessary, but we should not blindly reject everything and get offended at everything. What happens if we do that is what is presented in this story.
I just wish that the author expanded on that story and built some more material and maybe ended differently.
A must-read, especially because of the times we are living in.
